This paper looks at the impact of culture on economic growth and modernization. The author argues that culture is an important contributor to development, however for it to spread across an entire society and not just within a single community it requires a supportive environment. The development of institutional infrastructure and respect for the law are reasons why certain communities outperform others even when the environment is non-supportive and why individuals from the subcontinent do so well when they move to a supportive environment.
