This study offers insights into the state of civil-military relations in developing societies. These insights evaluate a range of factors influencing the civil-military balance. The study examines the state of civil-military relations in five countries, in particular: Bangladesh and Pakistan in South Asia; and Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand in Southeast Asia. The study shows that the onset of civilian rule in South and Southeast Asia has had mixed results.
