This brief focuses on the outbreak of hostilities in India's northeastern state of Assam during the summer of 2012. The month-long violence between the Bodo people and local Muslims not only led to protests by Islamic organizations in different Indian cities, it also precipitated a well-crafted cyber-intimidation campaign by Islamists that forced the exodus of thousands of people from the region. Although a semblance of order has returned to affected districts, the core issues that led to the mayhem have not been addressed. As a result, the danger of greater violence cannot be ruled out.
