India's romance with nuclear disarmament is a long-standing one. Indeed, it is part the very DNA of the Indian state. This enthusiasm for disarmament, however, has led to an odd self-perception on the part of the Indian political class. It uncritically assumes that New Delhi will never work at cross purposes with the cause of nuclear disarmament. Even when India has tested nuclear bombs, the author if this Issue Brief complains, it has putatively done so in the name of nuclear eradication. Such a self-perception is not only unhelpful, it is dangerous.
