This special policy report is aimed at advancing the debate on Northeast Asian regionalism and understanding its place in the larger East Asian multilateralism. It outlines the gradual strengthening and institutionalization of regional cooperation between the Northeast Asian states (in particular China, Japan and South Korea). All the commentaries in the special policy report come to the conclusion that, first, the strengthening of Northeast Asian regionalism is a positive development for the sub-region and East Asia; second, that it does not constitute a challenge to ASEAN’s centrality in East Asia multilateralism and; third, that the ASEAN-led East Asian multilateralism and the developments in Northeast Asian regionalism are not mutually exclusive but complementary.
