This opinion piece gives a historical perspective of recent US interventions. The author argues that regardless of how often Americans rediscover how institutionally, culturally, and temperamentally ill-equipped they are to do nation-building, the United States will likely remain a ‘Crusader State’. He concludes that reforms are needed to ensure that administrations are better equipped to forge sound strategies that prevent bad choices from turning into bad foreign policies and incorporate lessons learned from the past.
