This brief discusses the attempted murder of 14 year-old Malala Yousafzai by Taliban gunmen in the SWAT region of Pakistan. Her survival, the brief argues, will be a constant reminder to Pakistan’s citizens of the dangers they face and the steps that need to be taken in order to redirect the country away from extremism.
