As this article emphasizes, South Asian countries face multiple environmental challenges. They include high birth rates, air pollution and the deteriorating quality of drinking water. Despite these problems and the growing economic, financial and social costs they entail, it is unlikely that South Asian countries (except India) will achieve the environmental goals and benchmarks prescribed by the UN's Millennium Development Goals any time soon. The article therefore concludes by emphasizing several immediate measures that need to be taken at the domestic, regional and global levels.
