This paper discusses the role of the European Union in international non-proliferation and disarmament assistance programs. The author describes how since the end of the Cold War a new type of international cooperation has taken place, as states have rendered practical assistance to each another in oder to reduce common threats arising from weapons of mass destruction as well as weapons-related materials and expertise. The paper outlines the EU's policy on supporting and conducting weapons disarmament in the former Soviet states and further also describes the EU's close cooperation with the United States on international non-proliferation initiatives.
