This paper discusses the bilateral relations and mutual perceptions between the EU and Turkey. The author explains how the relationship with the EU is a central problem for the self-definition of the Turks and constitutes one of the most important issues on the Turkish political agenda. The paper gives historical background information on the origins of the Turkish EU candidacy and provides an outlook on the possible path for Turkish accession deliberations.
