This report discusses issues surrounding the Japanese Self-Defense Force (JSDF) in response to the Great Eastern Japanese Earthquake (GEJE) of March 2011. The monograph consists of three parts. The first section provides an overview of JSDF activities in response to the earthquake. The second section attempts to shed light on how US military responded to the GEJE, and how the US military and the JSDF coordinated their activities. The monograph ends with a discussion of prospects and challenges.
