This policy brief analyzes the weakened security situation in Sinai since January 2011 following the downfall of Egyptian president Mubarak. The author writes that the peninsula is becoming a major resistance base and may be in the process of becoming the next hotspot in the Arab world. As Egypt and Israel attempt to grapple with this emerging challenge, the situation is threatening to disrupt the fragile peace in the region that has prevailed since the full withdrawal of Israeli forces in 1982.
