This paper offers an overview of social, economic and political developments in Africa. Weak states, problems in the perceived legitimacy of borders, and traditional rather than modern political constructs are all problems that have plagued the continent and contributed to its current situation. The author proposes some historical examples that can be of assistance to contemporary African states in their attempts towards modernization, as well as suggesting a potential role to play for hegemonic regional powers.
