This bulletin reflects on the disputes in the China Seas from a US perspective. It argues that following through on comprehensive rebalancing is the most important way that the United States can continue to help stabilize the Asia-Pacific region. Having considered the potentially destabilizing factors in the region, the author advocates an active continuation of US support for the maintenance of good order at sea. The potential for an arms race and/or conflict and importance of these seas for the United States and the region underscore the need for a well thought-out policy for intelligently managing these contested waters in the months and years ahead.
