This paper discusses the issue of ethnic minorities in Sri Lanka. The author points out that there are currently two key challenges that Sri Lanka faces in this context. The first is the old challenge of addressing the ethnic conflict. The Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission appointed by the government after the war has stated that the main cause of violence in Sri Lanka was the failure of successive governments to find a solution to the ethnic conflict. The second challenge is to safeguard and strengthen the system of checks and balances.
