This commentary discusses China-Japan relations in light of territorial tensions, increasing strategic distrust, and the spillover of political disputes into the economic arena. It argues that the enmity between China and Japan will be of great detriment to the interests of not only the two countries but the entire region. Beijing and Tokyo need to take practical measures to defuse tensions surrounding the standoff over the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands. Additionally, misperceptions about intentions on both sides need to be addressed and both countries should better manage public opinion and rein in nationalism. Lastly, China needs to think about how it wants to used its increased power and Japan needs come to terms with wartime crimes and achieve genuine reconciliation with its neighbors.
