In his second inaugural address, Barack Obama pledged to promote a more prudent, reasonable and constructive foreign policy for the United States. Does this pledge indeed apply to post-Chávez Venezuela? This paper argues that it does, but only if the US substitutes pragmatism and principle for vestigial Cold War ideology.
