This paper examines the potential future role for NATO in a world without Western hegemony. The author argues that NATO will have to function in one of two potential futures: one in which competition between the West and China creates a 'New Cold War' requiring NATO to draw on existing and new relationships to contain China's influence; and one in China joins the BRICS and other emerging powers to create a multi-polar world in which NATO could become a key element in globalized security.
