This report looks at Australia's role within the Pacific islands region. This area has been undergoing substantial and dynamic geopolitical change, with profound consequences for Australia. The changing tectonics of the Asian century, the dramatic rise of China and a bitter intra-regional dispute with Fiji are amongst the most visible developments. The report recommends that Australia engages more closely with sub-regional developments and repairs relations with Fiji. It should also address economic sources of instability, secure the foundations of education and health for the region, and build a more effective national base Pacific islands policy.
