This report offers policy suggestions for Australian initiatives in the Indian Ocean region. The authors argues that the Australian approach should include increased official development assistance to Africa and South Asia; an emphasis on oceans issues, including marine scientific research and fisheries; some attempt to rejuvenate and widen the scope of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation; and a web of bilateral relationships. The report also proposes that there should be a particular focus on the East Indian Ocean to build active and functional cooperation between the countries of that sub‑region.
