As the Indonesian economy is growing, so are the prospects for Indonesia to establish a leadership position in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is now starting to leverage both global and regional expectations about its future role and it is more interested in external issues than it was a decade ago. This paper argues that it is important for Australia to build a better strategic relationship with Indonesia. The two are complementary partners, but for the relationship to mature both governments have to be prepared to invest time and resources.
