This paper looks at the future of Australian submarine capability. The current Collins fleet is suffering from a series of maintenance problems. Remediation work is almost certain to be required if the fleet is to make it through to its designed end of life sometime in the middle of the next decade. The author argues that the national submarine capability needs to be managed holistically – treating Collins and the future submarine as stand-alone problems increases the chance that there will be a future capability gap.
