This commentary looks at the impact of the Syrian conflict on the competition between Saudi Arabia and Iran for regional leadership. As time goes by, Saudi Arabia faces a dilemma: either to continue to pursue regime change, risking igniting further regional instability and fueling a bloody and prolonged civil war, or to bet on a negotiated transition and thus bargain with Iran.
