This commentary argues that rapid systemic change has become a prominent feature of international relations and Southeast Asia is the perfect example of it. At the beginning of the millennium, compared to Southwest Asia and the Middle East, East Asia was a picture of tranquility. However, towards the end of the 2000s there was a discernible change in mood and perception. The author believes that we are at the very beginning of a drama that will move Southeast Asia to the center of global geopolitics for the foreseeable future.
