This paper outlines the risks faced by women in detention and the measures that can be taken to prevent them. It does so by focusing on the situation of women in detention in the criminal justice system. The author argues that to prevent the torture and ill-treatment of women prisoners, those who monitor the institutions that detain them must be sensitive to their particular situations. This means monitoring groups need to include women, people from the prisoners’ ethnic groups, female doctors and psychologists as well as members who can understand child psychology.
