This paper discusses the development of relations between the Turkish government and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) up to March 2013. The authors contend that the ceasefire between the two is more than just a new attempt by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s administration to bring an end to the asymmetric war that has been waged for nearly 30 years in Turkey’s predominantly Kurdish south-east. Furthermore, due to regional security concerns, they also think Europe should do all it can to support the negotiation process.
