This paper argues that China’s enthusiasm to demonstrate its international influence is taking the form of a claim to exceptionalism in world affairs. The author argues that unlike American exceptionalism, the Chinese version is not done in order to remake the world in its own image. Instead, the aim is to assert greater influence on the world stage, consolidate its widening orbit of interests and ensure its ongoing prosperity, and to present itself as a major stakeholder in the global community.
