This paper looks into American and Australian China policy. It examines the choices between idealism and realism these countries and China will have to take as well as their economic and security interests. It also looks at the benefits and risks of alliances. In particular, the author assesses the prospects of US power for the future and China’s mix of Leninism and consumerism. He also reviews Australia’s future trading position and its ability to position China within its wider Pacific vision. He believes that peaceful competition will emerge between the US and China, which will lead to the possibility of further progress for the region.
