Australia fully appreciates the critical role that the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons plays in blunting the spread of 'nukes', and in promoting their eventual abolition. Unfortunately, while Canberra's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s commitment to the NPT remains firm, its disarmament policy has now hit ‘a rough patch’. This paper focuses on how an updated commitment to the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI) might resolve Australia's current problems.
