This brief looks at whether Chinese political and business interests are related. To do this, it examines China’s trade with Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines, countries where China's ties have been strained. The analysis shows that political differences have a minimal impact on trade and China separates its political engagement from the economic. The author concludes that India should take the same approach when dealing with China.
