This commentary analyzes Japan-India strategic cooperation and argues that India needs to reduce its emphasis on autonomy and Japan on alliance if they are to realize their full potential in Asia and beyond. Furthermore, the author argues they should focus more on the virtues of alignment. To do this, they should first establish a basic military information exchange accord and then agree to share equipment and supplies during UN operations. Finally, both countries need to keep their defense cooperation on a strictly bilateral basis.
