This brief outlines the results and aftermath of the May 2013 elections in Malaysia, and the issues they have created for the Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak. The author argues that following the elections, Najib faces multiple challenges including electoral legitimacy and the need to build confidence in political institutions. Overall, he argues that Najib has been left in a weaker position by the elections and that the chances of substantive reforms in the country are more remote than ever.
