This commentary discusses China's development since the 1990s and prospects for its future under Xi Jingping. By comparing two sessions of the Salzburg Seminar, one held in mid-1995 and another at the end of 2012, the author shows how a dramatic transformation has taken place in China and in terms of its international role. The article concludes by listing some of the key questions that result from China's development and how the international community can benefit from conferences similar to the Salzburg seminars to address them.
