This commentary examines the relevance of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Asia’s geopolitical order. It argues that in the absence of internal unity in ASEAN, major powers will continue to divide Southeast Asian states. This is especially true of the US and China. If ASEAN states want to do more to ensure autonomy, the author argues they should reduce inequalities between members, foster regional identity, and recognize the shared nature of regional challenges.
