This commentary provides an assessment of the political situation in Timor-Leste. Despite extensive international support, the country’s long-term stability remains uncertain. Unemployment, income inequality and an over-reliance on oil and gas revenues constitute major economic challenges for Dili. The country’s political system has also become ineffective and suffers from corruption. The author argues, however, that if the country's leaders take more responsibility for their actions, then the country's future need not be one of instability and poverty.
