This commentary argues that the removal of President Morsi in July 2013 is a positive development for Egypt. While the resulting instability has raised the prospect of internal violence, the continuation of Morsi’s presidency would have generated more risks in the future. Furthermore, while Egypt may have a long way to go before it has a true open and democratic society, the author argues it is only now that the Muslim Brotherhood has been removed that it has a chance to succeed in this aim.
