In the aftermath of President Morsi’s removal, this commentary argues that predictions of the fall of Islamism in Egypt are premature. The Egyptian military may have removed the Muslim Brotherhood from office, but it is doubtful that a new civilian administration will govern any more competently than either presidents Morsi or Mubarak. The author argues that Cairo’s fundamental problems remain and that these will only be overcome by finding a genuine liberal alternative which can break the cycle between military and religious regimes.
