This paper highlights the need for further progress in improving political and economic governance in Africa. The author argues that regional initiatives form an important part of attempts to not only improve governance, but also the multiple problems that the continent still faces. Accordingly, initiatives like the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) are seen as 'markers of progress' that Africa continues to make, and will ensure that it becomes a significant actor in global affairs.
