This paper examines India's rapid economic development between 1990 and 2011. It compares India's economic performance and social indicators against those of its neighbors and finds that despite economic growth, India's neighbors have outperformed New Delhi in a number of key areas. In concluding, the paper notes that India cannot aspire to global economic status without first improving basic social standards.
