This publication addresses the Arab upheavals and the longer-term implications of these for security and stability in the greater Middle East. The author argues that a 'new order' is emerging in the region characterized by a widespread rejection of the modern state system and the return to traditional regional balancing. Western policies, he concludes, will only aggravate the crisis in the Middle East as Western politicians do not take into account the voices of regional leaders and focus instead on Israeli-Palestinian negotiations and on empowering Islamist-based 'democratic' regimes throughout the Arab World.
