This brief discusses the use of coercion in China's foreign policy. It looks at the use of pressure and intimidation used by China in maritime disputes over contested territory in the South China Sea and over the East China Sea islands. The authors argue that, against this background, China’s neighbors and concerned powers like the United States will need to calibrate more carefully their actions related to disputed maritime territories.
