This brief discusses the political turbulence in the Arab world since 2011 and what this means for political transitions in Southeast Asia. After giving a short historical overview of Southeast Asia’s political transitions since the mid-1970s, the author talks about the key lessons learned for democratization in the region. He concludes that Southeast Asia would do well to assist the Arab states in strengthening their institutions and economies.
