This report analyzes the fundamental changes that have occurred in Middle Eastern security since 2011, with a special emphasis on the following five issues -- 1) the relationship between states and their societies; 2) the dynamics between local states with the West, and the foreign policy posturing that is linked to them; 3) the impact of the Iran-Syria-Hizbollah resistance front, and the radical-moderate divide; 4) the Sunni-Shia rift and the rise of identity politics; and 5) the Saudi-Qatar rivalry, which partially has its roots in the divisions over the Muslim Brotherhood.
