This paper explores the role of the business elite, which developed during the Mubarak era, in Egypt's transition process. The author argues that the elite was successful in preserving economic power and political influence in the post-Mubarak era and that the attempt by the Muslim Brotherhood to co-opt the business elite failed. He claims that not only the people on the streets, but also entrenched interest groups, including the business elite, worked behind the scenes to ensure the Brotherhood’s political downfall.
