This report examines the impact of mass migration on Yangon, Hargeisa, Beirut and Nairobi to assess how migration could increase the potential for conflict in global South urban areas. The authors’ findings suggest that migrants in and of themselves do not constitute a security threat. However, there are direct and indirect knock-on effects of the migration of large numbers of people into congested urban spaces – such as those related to the stresses placed on cities, the securitization of migrants and more - that do increase the risk of civic conflict.
