This commentary examines the sharp increase in defense spending across Asia. Rather than being an arms race, the author argues that Asia's military buildup is better characterized as an 'arms catch-up' and that in many cases, this has less to do with strategic considerations than domestic ones. He also contends that, the implications of Asia's military buildup are far from certain and it remains to be seen whether the buildup will enhance or endanger the region's security and stability.
