On 24 September 2013, thirteen of the largest armed opposition organizations in Syria announced their decision to unite under an Islamist-Jihadist banner. This publication argues that the emergence of this 'Islamist Alliance' will make any US and Western effort to influence the Syrian opposition groups close to impossible. The new alliance also has important consequences for sponsors of the Syrian opposition, in particular Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. According to the author, these states will have to face the overt sponsorship of Jihadist forces and neo-Salafi Jihadism in Syria and the entire Mashriq.
