This brief examines the specter of a "power transition" from the US to China and the implications of this shift for states in the Asia-Pacific region. The author argues that China’s economic importance and military capabilities will greatly increase and that the days of unquestioned US strategic supremacy in the Asia-Pacific are over. However, he also says that China is showing signs that it might be extending its influence prematurely. He concludes that the outlook for a peaceful power transition is middling to poor.
