This note addresses the development of American conservatism. The author discusses three distinct dimensions that have always defined the movement and outlines its development from the traditional American conservatism of the 19th and early 20th centuries to its reinvention during the Great Stagflation of the 1970s. He concludes with a review of the prospects for conservatism following the decisive defeats of the Republican party in the elections of 2012.
