This guide aims to raise awareness on the key issues of immigration detention and, in particular, to encourage and assist parliamentarians in carrying out visits to detention centers where irregular migrants and asylum seekers are held. It clarifies the right of parliamentarians to undertake such visits and explains why it is important for parliamentarians to do so. Furthermore, it introduces some of the basic monitoring principles and methodology to be followed during visits.
